Rebel with a camera
Actor and contemporary witness: Dennis Hopper's photos from the 1960s
In the 1960s, Dennis Hopper His camera was with him everywhere – on film sets, at parties, while visiting restaurants, bars and galleries, in his car on the highway, at political rallies. He photographed film idols, pop stars, writers, artists, his girlfriends, but also complete strangers. In this way, he captured some of the most important moments of his generation with an intuitive and sharp eye. At the epicenter of the cultural upheaval in art, music and politics, he photographed stars such as Tina Turner in her studio, Andy Warhol at his first exhibition on the West Coast, Paul Newman on set or Martin Luther King at the civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
The extensive selection of this volume was compiled by Hopper himself together with gallery owner Tony Shafrazi. It brings together the Highlights of his career as a photographer and is now available again in a new edition. With introductory texts by Tony Shafrazi and Walter Hopps , the legendary promoter of the art of the American West Coast, a detailed biography and a new afterword by the journalist Jessica Hundley as well as excerpts from interviews that Victor Bockris with the stars portrayed by Hopper, his family and his friends, this book provides a comprehensive insight into the views and experiences of one of America's most fascinating personalities.
