Suffering and passion
The paintings of Mexico's most famous painter
Hardly any other artist rose as meteorically in art history as the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907–1954). She captured her unmistakable face in over fifty extraordinary self-portraits that have been admired for generations. These works, along with numerous photographs by renowned photographers such as Manuel and Lola Álvarez Bravo, Nickolas Muray, and Martin Munkácsi, made Frida Kahlo an icon of 20th century art .
After an accident in her early teens, Frida decided to become a painter. Her marriage to Diego Rivera in 1929 catapulted her to the forefront of the art scene, not only in Mexico, but also in the United States and Europe. None other than André Breton praised her work and included her in the international circle of Surrealists . In 1939, he exhibited her works in Paris , where Picasso, Kandinsky, and Duchamp admired her.
This volume offers an opportunity to get closer to Frida Kahlo's paintings than ever before —in brilliant reproductions and in conjunction with famous photographs. The book presents works from private collections that are difficult to access for the general public and shows works that were previously considered lost or have not been exhibited for more than 80 years .
Drawings, diary pages and a richly illustrated biography with photos of Frida, Diego and the Casa Azul – her home – provide an intimate insight into Frida Kahlo ’s life and her artistic universe .
