Masters of Magic
A fantastic journey through Disney's animated films
As one of the most comprehensive illustrated books ever published on Disney 's animated films, this volume brings together hundreds of illustrations and essays by renowned Disney experts, leading into the creative heart of the studio during the "Golden Age of Animated Film": The book traces Disney 's path from its beginnings in silent film, through its first feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), the groundbreaking artistic experiment Fantasia (1940), to the last masterpieces created under Walt Disney 's creative direction , Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966) and The Jungle Book (1967).
After extensive research in the archives of the Walt Disney Company and numerous private collections, editor Daniel Kothenschulte selected a wealth of rare gems of animation art for this volume: concept paintings and storyboards allow the genesis of the ideas to be relived, masterful cel setups show the famous film scenes in the greatest detail, while work photos by Disney photographers allow detailed insights into the creative work of the Walt Disney Studios.
Pinocchio , Fantasia , Dumbo , Bambi , Cinderella , Peter Pan , Lady and the Tramp , or 101 Dalmatians : Each of the famous Disney classics is given its own chapter. In addition, lesser-known gems such as the experimental short films of the Silly Symphonies and the long-neglected musical anthology films like Make Mine Music and Melody Time are also covered.
Contributions from such renowned Disney specialists as Leonard Maltin, Dave Smith, Charles Solomon, JB Kaufman, Russell Merritt and Brian Sibley illuminate the origin stories of the films and pay tribute to the creative minds behind the scenes, the animators and designers who shaped the Disney style, including Albert Hurter, Gustaf Tenggren, Kay Nielsen , Mary Blair, Sylvia Holland, Tyrus Wong, Ken Anderson, Eyvind Earle and Walt Peregoy.
