There's No Place Like Home
Step inside the world's most beautiful contemporary homes.
In western India, Kamal Malik of Malik Architecture, Mumbai, has built an unconventional, sprawling house for himself and his family. Perched on six levels on a ridge overlooking two gorges, the house—seemingly devoid of walls—engages in a constant dialogue with the landscape. The House of the Three Streams owes its name to the streams that, during the monsoon rains, rush through the multi-generational complex and are cleverly integrated into the overall design, bridged by stairs, walkways, and corridors.
Casa de la Encina by Aranguren + Gallegos, an elegant, open, and clearly structured concrete building, is nestled among pine trees on the southern slope of Monte Abantos north of Madrid and resembles a large, modern viewing pavilion. The lower level, containing the bedrooms, is embedded in the rock and, like the upper level, which incorporates a holm oak tree found on the site, offers panoramic windows and verandas with breathtaking views of the plain stretching from the Sierra de Guadarrama to Madrid.
Shinichi Ogawa's seaside house in Kanagawa is a white, two-story minimalist marvel overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It has no openings to the street, neither windows nor doors. The living area, with its south-facing glass facade, flows seamlessly into a cantilevered terrace and an infinity pool that appears to merge with the sea.
These houses – and over 50 others – are remarkably individual in their design language, yet they all share the intention of developing a modern vision of living in and with nature, appreciating the topography of their surroundings, and seamlessly connecting indoors and outdoors. All the featured projects are documented with stunning architectural photographs, floor plans, and detailed descriptions.
