The artist as pop star
Soapbox cars and soap operas
Andy Warhol (1928–1987) is considered the most important representative of the Pop Art movement. He was a critical and astute observer of American society and creatively explored themes of consumerism, materialism, media, and celebrity culture.
Warhol drew inspiration for his art from advertising, comics, consumer products, and the faces of Hollywood stars. He thus radically redefined the question of the object of art . Through him, Campbell's soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles became just as worthy of representation as a traditional still life. At the same time, he revolutionized the role of the artist. He proclaimed: "I want to be a machine" and reduced his personal involvement in the creation of artworks by modern reproduction techniques used and in his studio The Factory employed dozens of assistants.
This book presents Warhol's multifaceted and comprehensive oeuvre, which the difference between high and pop culture lifts and addresses the lifestyle, production methods and consumer behavior of today.
