Jens Umbach "The Afghans"
When Jens Umbach first traveled to Afghanistan in 2010, he was stationed at the Bundeswehr's Camp Marmal near Mazar-i-Sharif and photographed German soldiers deployed there. Four years later, Umbach returned with the desire to photographically document the people who, living in the immediate vicinity of the German camp, had experienced the many conflicts of recent years in Afghanistan's fourth-largest city. He captured moments of hope as well as disappointment, always focusing clearly on the people who give the region its character and its life – the Afghans.
"With this project, I want to document how the lives of the people in Masar-i Sharif have changed as a result of the German military intervention."
