Kirsten Roschlaub

Capturing Timeless Beauty

Kirsten Roschlaub, a gallery owner and advocate of timeless masterpieces, takes us on her personal journey through the world of photographic art. We discuss the current exhibition and her path to opening her own gallery.

Thank you for taking the time for us. I'd like to start by talking about the current exhibition "Rarities of Photographic Art." Can you say a little about it?

KIRSTEN ROSCHLAUB Of course, I'm delighted to be here. The exhibition "Rarities of Photographic Art" is a special collaboration between our Roschlaub Gallery and the Capitis Gallery. We're showing 25 works by renowned photographers such as Helmut Newton, Horst P. Horst, FC Gundlach, Jürgen Schadeberg, Norman Parkinson, Burt Glinn, and Hansel Mieth. These names read like a who's who of photographic art, and the exhibited images, all black-and-white originals, come from private collections. It's a rare opportunity to see and even acquire such masterpieces.

That sounds truly fascinating. How did this collaboration come about, and what makes this exhibition so special?

KIRSTEN ROSCHLAUB The idea for this collaboration arose from our shared passion for photography and the desire to offer art lovers something truly unique. The images featured in this exhibition are true rarities that are not normally available to the public. Through our collaboration with Capitis Gallery, we were able to bring these extraordinary works together and make them accessible to a wider audience.

In addition to special exhibitions like these, you also focus on contemporary photography in your gallery. Can you tell us more about your concept and principles?

KIRSTEN ROSCHLAUB We present works by various photographers in our exhibitions and offer our customers the opportunity to purchase these works of art online. It is important to us to offer images of exceptionally high quality and to continually present our customers with new discoveries from the world of photography.

Galerie Roschlaub has been located in the heart of Hamburg since 2015. How did you become a gallery owner? Was there a specific turning point, or was it more of a gradual process?

KIRSTEN ROSCHLAUB The decision to become a gallery owner was actually more of an accident. In the summer of 2003, while looking for new office space for my agency, I came across subsidized space designated for use as a gallery. I thought, why not just hang a few pictures on the wall and open a gallery? This spontaneous decision turned out to be a true passion, and I quickly realized that I really enjoyed being a gallery owner. It was a gradual process, but I'm glad I had the courage to pursue this path.
