Real Berlin flair
Helmut Newton's homage to his hometown
Helmut Newton, born in Berlin in 1920 He trained under the legendary photographer Yva and turned to fashion, portrait, and nude photography. At just 18 years old, he was forced to flee the Nazis, but Newton never really left Berlin. After his career took off in Paris in the 1960s, he regularly returned to his hometown and created important photo series for the magazines Constanze, Adam, Vogue, Condé Nast's Traveler, ZEITmagazin, Men's Vogue, Max, and Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, as well as his own magazine, Helmut Newton's Illustrated.
In 1979, the newly founded German Vogue commissioned him to retrace his youthful journey, particularly capturing the fashion aspect. The resulting portfolio, "Berlin, Berlin!", also provided the title for the exhibition celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Helmut Newton Foundation.
This book shows Newton's iconic Berlin photographs as well as many unknown images from the 1930s to the 2000s: night owls in the city's trendy clubs and restaurants, nude photographs in the old Berlin guesthouses of his youth as well as the Berlin film scene with Hanna Schygulla and Wim Wenders at the Berlin Wall, John Malkovich and David Bowie .
In October 2003, just a few months before his death, Newton transferred large parts of his archive to his new foundation, housed in the former Landwehrkasino next to the Zoologischer Garten station—the station from which he hastily left Berlin in the winter of 1938. This publication brings the story of his extraordinary life and work full circle.
