The (almost) forgotten of Mazar-i Sharif

When Jens Umbach first traveled to Afghanistan in 2010, he was housed at the Bundeswehr Camp Marmal near Mazar-i Sharif, where he portrayed German soldiers deployed there. Four years later, Umbach returned with the desire to photographically document the people who lived in the immediate vicinity of the German camp and had witnessed the many conflict situations of recent years in Afghanistan's fourth-largest city. He captured moments of hope, but also of disappointment. The focus was always clearly on the people who give the region its face and its life—the Afghans.

“With this project, I want to document how the lives of the people in Mazar-i Sharif have changed as a result of the German military intervention.”
