The (almost) forgotten of Mazar-i Sharif

When Jens Umbach traveled to Afghanistan for the first time in 2010, he was accommodated in the Bundeswehr Camp Marmal near Masar-i Sharif and portrayed German soldiers deployed there.

Four years later, Umbach returns with the desire to photographically document those people who, in the immediate vicinity of the German camp, have experienced the many conflict situations of the last few years in the
fourth largest city in Afghanistan.

He captures moments of hope, but also of disappointment. The focus is always clearly on the people who give the region its face and its life—the Afghans.

“With this project, I want to document how the lives of the people in Mazar-i Sharif have changed as a result of the German military intervention.”
