Works of true masters

The Roschlaub and Capitis galleries present photographic art from Gundlach to Schadeberg

They are some of the biggest names in photography: Helmut Newton, Horst P. Horst and FC Gundlach, Jürgen Schadeberg, Norman Parkinson, Burt Glinn and Hansel Mieth.

Their often iconic images are world-famous. The Roschlaub Gallery and the Capitis Gallery are jointly exhibiting rarely seen works by the photographers in the Roschlaub Gallery's space in Rotherbaum.

The photographs, all original black-and-white, come from private collections and are now for sale. They include rarely seen images and well-known subjects, such as Romy Schneider, portrayed by FC Gundlach, who shaped journalistic fashion photography for decades, photographed stars such as Hildegard Knef and Jean-Luc Godard, and founded the "House of Photography" in the Deichtorhallen.

Further highlights are the pictures by Jürgen Schadeberg.

He became known for his pictures depicting the lives of Black people in Johannesburg in the 1950s . There's a particularly beautiful story surrounding his photograph of Hans Prignitz performing gymnastics on the railings of St. Michael's Church: Schadeberg, then only 17 years old, was working at the German Press Agency in Hamburg shortly after the end of the war. Here, he met his childhood friend from Berlin, Hans Prignitz. Hans Prignitz, who had become an artist by then, asked Jürgen Schadeberg for a promotional photo of him performing in front of an audience.

The talented but still inexperienced Schadeberg triggered a loud explosion with his flash powder, forcing him to leave the vaudeville theater. Just a few days later, Hans Prignitz and Jürgen Schadeberg arranged to do a new recording, this time at the Michel. This unique and captivating motif was the result.

But no matter how all the pictures were created, whether in the studio or in unusual locations: “Such a high-caliber exhibition with works by true masters is rare,” says gallery owner Kirsten Roschlaub happily.
